SPROTT - James Alexander Sprott, July 17, 1933 - October 27, 2011. Jim passed away peacefully at his Grand Rapids home with his wife Montelou at his side. Jim fought a 5 year courageous battle with lung cancer. He is survived by his children, Kathleen (Ron) Gulembo, Michael (Cheryl) Spillane, Tara (Bob) Dalga, Peri (David) Cordes, Patrick (Chris) Spillane, Meegan (Bruce) Fritsma, James (Cathy) Sprott; 13 grandchildren, Jessica, Erin, Ryan, Steven, Holly, Lindsey, Ryan, Katie, Danielle, Cody, Cara, Bruce, Joshua; and eight great grandchildren. Jim was preceded in death by his parents James and Christian Sprott and his sister Christian Gunn. His sister, Jean (Dick) Erdenberger and sister-in-law, Marcia Howe survives as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Jim was born in Lakeside, OH in 1933. He was raised in Grand Haven, MI and graduated from Michigan State University with a degree in Accounting. Jim worked in the trucking industry for many years, living in Syracuse, Los Angeles, and Grand Rapids. Jim loved to travel and hike. He and Montelou traveled to 49 states in the Union and all of the Canadian provinces including Nova Scotia in their RV. He enjoyed exploring Civil War battlefields and historical sites. Tracing his family's genealogy took them to many unusual small towns and out of the way places. Recently he and his wife toured Scotland and Ireland, visiting his parent's birthplaces in Aberdeen and Helensburgh. Tennis was a passion that Jim pursued during his winters in Mesa, AZ. Watching football or reading were his favorite pastimes. Jim was a caring, devoted husband and father. He provided his family with tremendous love, generosity, and guidance. He will be greatly missed. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be directed to Spectrum Hospice through Spectrumhealthfoundation.org. A memorial service will be held Sunday, October 30, 2011 at 2:30 p.m. at Forest Hills Presbyterian Church, 36th Street and Cascade Rd. in Grand Rapids. Reyers North Valley Chapel
